My ancestor tree
|
This website in a nutshellDespite EDDY being such a prevalent Cornish surname, I haven't yet found that master EDDY tree - so I'm attempting to build one. Although my ancestors were from in and around St Just in Penwith I'm still keen to gather information on the ancestors and descendants of all Cornish EDDYs, regardless of whether they're somewhere else in Cornwall or abroad. The 1,200 EDDYs featured in my database have married into so many other families that the database contains over 2,400 people and features many Cornish surnames. Some of the jigsaw pieces stretch back to the 1600s, and many branches of the tree can be found in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the USA, mainly due to the emigration of Cornish miners. If you've not visited for a while, the What's New page acts as a log of key changes and updates to the website.
How to find someoneThe genealogical data is contained entirely in a database, however, there is a summary of the earliest EDDYs in each of the jigsaw pieces - i.e. the 'patriarchs' - on the EDDY Patriarchs of West Cornwall page.
How to contribute to this projectAccording to the Cornwall Family History Society's transcriptions of the census returns from 1841, 1861, 1871 and 1891, there were 244, 303, 287 and 219 EDDYs in St Just, respectively. With so many EDDYs, I suspect that most genealogists with a few generations of their own extended families in St Just, will have an EDDY lurking somewhere! It's in these instances, where 2 or more generations of EDDYs have been researched and compiled, that the jigsaw pieces are constructed but rarely connected to other pieces. I am keen to collate these jigsaw pieces, connect them where possible, and publish them on this website. This will be an ongoing project with the goal of creating a 'master' tree for anyone interested in the EDDYs from Cornwall. The information so far published has only been possible thanks to the many contributions from other genealogists, and I appeal for your contributions if you can help the tree to grow or improve its accuracy. Perhaps you have a marriage certificate with an EDDY marrying one of your ancestors or an EDDY as a witness, perhaps you have a family bible or details of an EDDY death... whatever it is, if you think it could help this project I'd love to hear from you. The best way to send your jigsaw pieces of genealogical data is to email me a GEDCOM file which can be exported from most genealogy programs. I can then import the file into the database and avoid the laborious data input. My email address is at the bottom of each page - note it's an image to avoid spam so you'll have to re-type.
My ancestors - who and whereMy direct ancestors back to my 4*Great Grandparents can be seen on my ancestor tree as well as EDDY, other surnames that appear in my tree include ELLIS, HALL, NICHOLLS, OATS, OLDS, ORWELL, PAWLYN, STEVENS, THOMAS, UREN, and WILLIAMS (capitals are used to avoid confusion with forenames).
Other bits and piecesTo assist genealogists with their searches, there is a page of genealogy links that I have categorised and added a brief comment describing each link, I very rarely update this page though. Finally, if anyone is curious about Cornish names like Kernow, Penryn, Chyandour, Men-an-Tol... and what they actually mean, click here for a basic guide to the Cornish language.
